As the country gets closer to wrapping up Women’s Month, the City of Johannesburg’s Members of Mayoral Committee (MMC) hosted a dialogue on the role of local government in the fight against Gender-Based-Violence.
Researcher and project consultant in the faculty of humanities at Wits University Lisa Vetten unpacked the statistics of gender based violence during the dialogue, revealing that the city needs to focus on Alexandra, Dobsonville, Diepsloot and Moroka as they are areas in Johannesburg that report the most cases of rape in the country.
Vetten also reiterated that it is important that the metro police officers are trained to assist women embroiled in domestic violence
