The Minister of Higher Education, Science and Innovation tries to bridge youth unemployment
The Minister of Higher Education, Science and Innovation, Dr Blade Nzimande said the Department of Higher Education and Training has embarked on generating the Scarce, Critical Skills as well as the Occupations in High Demand lists to guide programme offerings and student enrolments in the PSET institutions.
The aim of the programme is to assist students with placement, given that the lack of experience is the biggest barrier to securing a job for the youth. It will also encourage students to move into self-employment following their completion of studies.
Wits students shared their sentiment following the minister’s announcement, keeping in mind that, the programmes might bring fourth opportunities different from those they aim for, they are still keen about the programme.

I think it a good opportunity because at the end of the day, there is a job shortage where graduate are not getting jobs so it a way to get employment, even if it deviate from my initial career path, still a good thing because it will help the economy at the end of the day.
According to my humble perspective, with my situation coming from a poor background, I have to have a job even if I don’t like that job. I will have to do it anyway because coming from poor families you just have to provide at the end of the day.
