All things hair- Blog Entry 2 (Assignment 2)
Braids -All things hair
Portia Namane |
There’s always some sort of hair trend
going on, this season the American singer, Alicia Keys inspired the new old trend African
hair style. We see almost everything that existed years back coming back with a
new twinkle and twist on it. This time it all things hair, hair is very
important to most individuals. Portia Namame from The University of the Free
State stated this is because “It gives a boost to your facial features and outfit.” Says gorgeous Miss Namane rocking the new hairstyle trend.
Even though the artist inspired and made
the braids look cool, this hair style now has its own name, the exquisite
planted braids are called fulani. It been a new hot trend since 2017 for most
black women and by surprise other races too. Fulani came in and immediately
swept out fox lock which were made fashionable by our every own South African actress Nomzamo
Mbatha .
Even though fulani had since been popular late 2017, at the University of the Free State student only started trying the hairstyle after the first quarter/term immediately after @Mihlalii_n an Instagram popular blogger/make-up artist mostly followed by South African youth, posted the picture of her new bagging hairstyle on the 9th of March 2018 thereafter it was obvious who were followers of this Instagram superstar and I must say, we quite a lot!
While others think Alicia Keys braids are
different from Fulani, I believe there are the same. The reason I put Alicia
Keys braids which were in fashion 16 years ago in the same category with Fulani
it because they both have beads and planted with fiber or natural hair
depending on the length and texture of one’s hair. They both have the similar design; Fulani
just has a modern design that is clearly rooted from Alicia Keys braids. Now
days there’s beautiful beads that are see through, before beads with warm
colours were used.
I asked a drama student who inspired their
hairstyle and she surprised me by mentioning a new name she said “My hair is
inspired by Kendrick Lamar” I was in shock because first of all this was a girl
and Kendrick Lamar, or should I say the modern poet is just a phenomenal rapper
and no hair trendsetter well that’s at least what I thoughts. Asked her if she
followed Mihlali, baby girl had no clue who I was referring too.
Well I’m just glad that even though Bloemfontein
is in the heart of South Africa, right at centre, we still catch the boat of
trends exported at the banks of the sea.
