The Department of Higher Education, Science and Innovation has taken a significant step towards curbing gender-based violence at institutions of higher learning. By releasing a set of instruments, guidelines and protocols that will help turn the sectoral GBV Policy Framework into practical implementation across campuses at institutions of higher learning.


Wits gender equity office, said many institutions have no structures currently in place and are not being financially supported to create these structures. The different contexts of different universities require different approaches and education plans 


Higher Health CEO Erica Emdon delivered the protocols during a webinar on GBV in the higher education sector. Emdon said these protocols will compel institutions to put in place mechanism to raise awareness of GBV and ensure that victims are protected.

The framework highlight that each institution is compelled to put in place mechanism to raise awareness and ensure that victims are protected and assisted when they experience GBV, so in other words, each and every campus has a responsibility to start addressing it what higher health has done it has created broad documentation guidelines “
