Most first year students fail and get excluded by the university because they do not know and understand the system.
These words were shared by Wits SRC academic Officer Mongezi Maluleka during a webinar discussion surrounding the topic of being academically excluded by the university.
Last year wits university admitted twenty four thousand undergrad student and only two thousand four hundred and one were academically excluded, which is the lowest the number of exclusion in the past few years.
"Out of this eight hundred and forty-eight that went through WRC 1 and WRC 2, basically the first, second and last stages of appeal only forty nine students who exhausted all the appeals and got excluded, meaning that ninety-four percent were successful and brought back. What usually happens during this process you send your letter to WRC 1 along with your documents or WRC 2 if you were not approved by WRC1. So those who get excluded are those who fail fifty percent of their course, the university automatically exclude you" says officer Maluleka.
Maluleka said student get financially excluded once they’ve failed fifty percent of their exams. Once a student is excluded by the institution, it is required of them to re-appeal at Wits Readmission Committee (WRC) with a letter stating how and why the student failed.
Maluleka further encouraged student not give up once excluded but rather try out the next three provided stages for re-admission.
