Life on campus
Art is something that makes you breath with a different kind
of happiness, which is why The University of Free State was hosting The Annual
Final Year Student Exhibition of the Department of Fine Art, at Johannes
Stegmann Art Gallery.
Four final year students exhibited they art work at the
gallery. The students names are Danielle Pretorius, Petra Schutte, Dienka Staal
and Robynne Gouws. These students created stunning work that’s unique in a sense
that the whole room look still and direct contact with any of the piece
transported you to a whole new world of your own.
The art pieces spoke a million words about the level of
experience possessed by the artists. One that stood out for me was art by Gouws and
Pretorius. Gouws work is unspeakable because the drawing were done with a pen
that displays bodily movement “by drawing out these movements I become aware of
my body as a tool, a bar as a tool and my pen as a tool. As the limits of what I
can do are constantly trained and exceeded I gain virtuosity in my abilities.” Says
Gouws as she strongly believe that artwork stimulates.
Pretorius work brought colour at the art gallery.
Red Coast 2.Oil, acrylic and beeswax on canvas stood out in her artwork. She explained
that “my artwork grapple with a sense of fatedness or chance a Geworfenheit in
this world” she went on and add that growing up at the coast of South Africa (
Richard Bay) inspired this piece.
